If You're Having a Bad Body Day...

Are you having a bad body image day? That’s so normal, it's okay. Here are some reasons to keep working on self love and fat positivity.

(A caveat: this list is quite personal, it is based on my own feelings after a couple of years of focusing on rejecting fatphobic societal body standards, an interest in Health at Every Size and having an anti diet stance. I feel it's important to point out that I share all of this coming from a place of privilege regarding my body, as an "in betweenie" {neither fat nor thin} I cannot speak to the experience of people who face daily oppression because of their body size, I share because things like this helped me to keep going and mean no offence xx)

💗 One day you won't feel defined by your weight, body or how you look.

💗 One day you'll eat whatever you crave without guilt. You'll realise that honouring your hunger is the only way to satiate it.

💗 One day you'll look in the mirror and love what you see, or maybe you won't and that's okay, but you won't hate it, you'll accept it and know you don't need to change.

Those of us who've done a lot of diet cycling will understand this feeling, I know personally that when I lost weight I still wasn't happy, what needed to change was my mindset.

💗 One day you'll move through this world and not feel guilt or the need to apologise for the space you take up. You deserve to be here as much as anyone else does.

Nor is being fat a bad thing. All bodies are good bodies.

💗 One day you'll realise you deserve the kindness and open-mindedness you show other people.

💗 One day you'll only wear clothes that you love and feel comfortable in, and you won't give a damn about what others think of you in them. You'll dress for you and you alone.

💗 One day you'll realise that the system is completely rigged, and that how we've been conditioned to feel about our bodies is not and never was our fault. You will be angry, for yourself, for all the many others struggling, but it will also bring you peace and understanding.

💗 One day you will marvel at the things you can achieve when you stop focusing on your weight, size and other unattainable beauty standards. You will be proud of the person you've become and no longer hate yourself.

Me, very pregnant, out canvassing for Repeal earlier this year. Yes I'm proud of myself, feminists achieved something huge this year, and I was one of them. I'm not saying that you can't change the world if you're dieting, but it sure does free up a lot of goddamn time when you stop. The Naomi Wolf quote from The Beauty Myth comes to mind: "Dieting is the most potent political sedative in women's history; a quietly mad population is a tractable one."
